THE MERTON SOCIETY

America's Oldest "Tea Drinking and Whisky" Speaking Society

MEETINGS

Background
Merton Society meetings follow three simple traditions:
  1. Each meeting is announced ahead of time by a posted Bill of Affaires, which lists the schedule of lectures and other activities for the evening. For the more important meetings, an Invitation is often sent with the Bill of Affaires to members.
  2. At the beginning of the meeting, and upon entering the room, each member is announced by title by the designated Le Huissier Audiencier.
  3. Whisky, tea, and other libations are served in teacups, and they often are accompanied by cigars and other forms of epicurean indulgence.

Bills of Affaires and Invitations

The Bills of Affaires traditionally have been used to list the events planned for each Merton Society meeting and/or lecture series. The Invitations have been used to whet the members' appetites for a pending meeting or dinner. Unfortunately, due to unknown circumstances, the only Bills of Affaires or Invitations remaining in the Society's archives are those listed below.
